Why Am I Fat?

"Why am I fat?", is a question that does not have as simple an answer as it would seem. At first glance many people who are not fat would offer up answers like, lazy, undisciplined, just plain eats to much etc. Though these are valid reasons in many cases, we simply can't just assume that this is the case. It is becoming more and more prevalent to have an overactive thyroid gland, which can lead to weight issues. In fact there are a myriad of chemical imbalances and other strangeness that are symptomatic of our modern lifestyles.
All too often we dismiss the over weight for being a less than normal part of society. Lets look at the environment first off. We are absolutely bombarded by low nutrition, high fat foods. You go anywhere and you just simply cannot find a meal within budget that is of an acceptable nutrition level. It's just too easy for us to forgo our better judgment and just buy the quickest and best tasting meal available. If you're reading this and you're thin, you may be indeed thinking that I'm describing people who are undisciplined, lazy folk. Think again, we all have different metabolisms and some of us have the raw end of the stick. If you can eat anything you please and never gain weight, then you're extremely lucky. Now just imagine that eating the way you do now, resulted in your weight going up every week.
Can you even begin to imagine the helplessness you would feel? The shear frustration that others dining at the same fast food place, eating the same greasy, quick fix food, are not showing signs of the same problem as you.
No to mention that how others make you feel when they look at you.
As far as I can see, being over weight is really just another sign of our times. It's much like a reaction that certain of us are having to the pollution our bodies are undergoing everyday and some of us are lucky and some of us are not so lucky.
Don't lose hope, if you're constantly dieting and watching what you eat and wondering "Why am I Fat", and starting to go a little crazy, then maybe it's not food.
It has recently been discovered that there are specific bacteria in your body that are probably contributing heavily towards your weight gain. Try visiting

To Lose Weight - Starting With Your Mind

To lose weight and get in great shape takes a lot of self-discipline, and determination.
When most people begin their journey of losing weight and getting in great shape, they over-look an important mental component that could be damaging their efforts: Doing a lot of talking and not a lot of doing. Those that spend their time talking about what they are going to do instead of doing it, usually either ends up not doing it at all or stop doing it prematurely.
If you want to attain success with losing weight, you must eliminate the "talker" side of your persona, and become a doer.
This is not an easy task. It will take practice and repetition. Once you come to the realization you want to lose weight, this should be the first task you should work on. Why? Because to accomplish weight loss success, it first begins with your mind.
One of the best practices to becoming more of a doer instead of a talker is...wait for it...just do it!
If you feel sluggish one day, believe it or not, that is one of the most important times to workout, or do some type of physical activity. The reason for that is because you are effectively training your mind and body to know no limits, therefore you will be less inclined to sit around saying something like, ("oh I have to get out today and do some exercises, I hate the way my stomach looks"), and actually getting out there, or in home, and do something about it.
Remember, before you get serious about losing weight, train your mind first, then train your body to get that physique you've always wanted.

Reasons You Are Not Losing Anymore Weight

There is a reason you are probably not losing any more weight, and you may be unaware of it. Here is a detailed list of things that people often do that disable them from their weight loss goals.

Consuming too much Salt and Sugar
Salt and sugar are consumed in many meals we eat. In fact salt and sugar is the main reason we may taste the meal. When you eat too much sugar your blood sugar level raises, hence the name blood sugar; when the body notices this, it makes an effort to put the BSL back to its original state. The sugar is then stored as fat. The thing that confuses many people with the nutrition labels is that fat label may say zero, but all the sugar is converted into fat anyways, so just because it doesn't say there's any fat in the product, there usually is.
Consuming too much Alcohol or Soda (including diet soda)
There is not much fat in Alcoholic drinks, but they will make you fatter because of there calorie amount. Calories convert of fat. We all know that pop has a lot of sugar, and diet pop is the same thing. In fact diet pop is even worse, because it makes people think they can eat more, and they do, so they get even fatter! Stick to drinking water or tea (unsweetened) if you want to lose weight.

Habit of Skipping Meals
If you have a habit of skipping meals please listen in. Skipping meals is not a smart idea. Why? Because when you skip meals your metabolism is reduced. Yes you will consume fewer calories if you skip meals, but your metabolism will be lower, so it will take a much longer time for the body to burn fat. Try eating smaller meals more frequently it will keep the metabolism at its peak and you will burn fat much faster.

You don't drink enough water
Many people don't know why they can't think clearly sometimes. Usually its because you are dehydrated and your not getting enough water in your system. I have noticed it with myself, and have realized that I had problems with this issue. So what I did was get one of those 3 liter big bottles at CVS or your local grocery store, and just carried it with me through out the day. Dehydration also causes headaches and migraines. When your body is dehydrated imagine your brain like a sponge. When its dehydrated it is like a sponge with no water, then once you hydrate it, it is like a sponge with water. You want the sponge to have water. So what's the point of drinking more water, and losing weight? Water can make you feel full, making you less hungry throughout the day. It can also increase your metabolism!

Little Exercise
Just because your working out does not mean you are burning off all the calories you need in order to lose weight. It's as easy as this - the longer you workout, the more calories you burn. So if you are consuming 3,000 calories a day, and your average calorie intake is 2,100, you will need to burn 1000 calories in order to have some weight loss effect.

You are net getting enough sleep
This is a very important one, when you sleep you burn calories, and you grow. If you lack with your sleep the body stores all sorts of these nasty fats in your body, which makes a huge mess when you don't sleep. In summary if you don't get a good quality or quantity of sleep your going to be fat.

Overwhelming yourself
Don't overwhelm yourself with workouts that you may not be able to do in such a short time. I remember when I started lifting, and I always wanted to lift as big as I could, but I had terrible repetition. I then started to take it easy, and learned to build myself to this level. Take it easy! Do not over exaggerate your confidence.

Causes of Obesity

Legally the answer is no but don't exhale in relief just yet. Over the years dozens of "fat discrimination" cases have went to court with very few being able to prove discrimination in the workplace. Denied promotions, awkward stares, and whispers in the office are kept very tidy by Human Resource departments across America. It would be very hard to believe that weight, looks, and other health issues haven't play a role in career advancement in Corporate America. Proving discrimination in the workplace can be almost impossible at best. Pan American Airways agreed to pay $2.35 million to 116 women who were discriminated against for being overweight in 1989 and hundreds of cases would follow in the 90's, but as the years pass, these types of cases in Corporate America are becoming extinct.

Healthcare costs have been the highest in recent years with many corporations forced to flip the bill for their employees. As a result, many companies have agreed to increase premiums for those who are overweight, smokers, have high cholesterol, and various other health impacting issues. The premise of the increase was to reward healthy behavior and help those with habit related problems. This may seem discriminatory however many healthy workers would disagree. Healthy workers who visit the doctor 1 to 2 times a year have been paying the same premiums as unhealthy workers who on average visit the doctor 9-13 times annually.
Discrimination anywhere and in any form is highly unacceptable but the reality is it exists. For many of us, being overweight is a choice. For others it's an illness that requires medical treatment. Deciding to go on a diet to lose weight can be one of the most mentally challenging processes filled with lots of doubt and many questions. However difficult the decision, it has to be your own. Motivation from outside sources, including work, is great but only you can make it happen. Can you be fired for being overweight? Legally no. But can you live a happier life by losing weight? Well, that depends on you.

Environmental Causes of Morbid Obesity Are Far Reaching

Morbid obesity is no laughing matter, especially to the over nine million Americans who are suffering with this condition. Add this to the millions in other developed countries around the world and morbid obesity is a significant health issue. By definition, a person can be diagnosed with obesity if they weigh at least 100 pounds over their ideal body weight and if they also have a BMI (body mass index) over 40. What makes someone morbidly obese as opposed to someone who is obese is the fact that those who are classified as morbidly obese have had the problem for many years so that the problem is termed as chronic.
What about Genetics?
When an individual suffers with obesity, they often want to figure out the cause, other than "eating too much" which is often the first thing people blame it on. This is not always the case but is very often a significant part of the problem. It's true that many professionals believe that genetics play a part in those who are obese, or fat. There was an article recently published in the Sunday Mail newspaper in Brisbane Australia about new studies declaring that the diet of the pregnant woman, can actually be a factor in whether or not her child has a future problem with obesity. So, what this means is that a child born with the predisposition to obesity will have to learn how to avoid developing it from a very early age. This is where the environment steps in.
Environmental Causes
After a child is born, their environment consists of their parents and family. They learn everything from them. So it's important that the family practices good, healthy eating and exercise programs as part of the family activities. It's not necessary to scare the children into eating right, but if from the beginning they are taught good practices for healthy living, they may head off the problem, at least for awhile.
When the child gets a bit older and is exposed to the activities of their peers and of course TV, well, then these more unhealthy environmental factors can influence the behavior of the child. Again, this is where the family and schools have to play a greater role in educating children about having a healthy lifestyle.
Other environmental issues can come into play as well. You have genetics which can affect metabolism, other medical conditions that can cause one to be obese, you have the culture and society into which one is born which can also influence the eating and lifestyle habits which can be good or bad. The socioeconomic status can be an environmental cause of morbid obesity because often the less healthy foods are less expensive to buy that the fresh, and healthy alternatives. So, if a family is simply not financially well off might feel they have no choice but to provide the unhealthy alternatives to their family members.
Health Problems Relating to Morbid Obesity
Many health problems can be in part attributed to by morbid obesity. These include but certainly aren't limited to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stroke, gallbladder problems, arthritis, and sleeping problems, like sleep apnea for example.
Lifestyle Decisions Can be Complicated
Most everyone in the western world (unless they've been living under a rock) are aware of the obesity epidemic. The issue then becomes, if we know all this, why is the problem getting worse and not better? Environmental influences contribute to the difficulty in making the healthy decisions because the person is influenced by their family, friends, TV, and other media. They want to feel "normal" and be able to have a lifestyle full of junk food and no exercise and still look like all the media stars they see on a daily basis. Then what happens, is they find out that they're getting fatter by the day , get depressed and then try to fill the void with even more food. It's quite a dilemma.
Changing your lifestyle is always a challenge at the best of times. Making the better decisions can be as simple as walking to the store instead of driving. Stop using the elevator and take the stairs. Get out into the fresh air for a half hour in the morning and afternoon and walk around the neighborhood. Simple but effective ways to alter your environment.
Help Doesn't Come Cheap
If you're one of the "rich and famous" and can have your own chef, personal trainer, and lifestyle coach then changing your life may seem to be easier. You can afford all the gym memberships and weight loss programs you want to help you achieve your goals. But if you're not one of "them", then you are left with the tried and true way of eating less than you you're used to, exercise more and make better food choices. Support for these changes is always important and the individual may again need their "environment" to change in order to get the support. They will need the help of friends and family and maybe even help through the Internet or diet and exercise programs. But, no matter what the environmental cause of morbid obesity is, the solution remains pretty much the same.
No Escaping Diet and Eating Behavior
No matter what the cause of morbid obesity, diet and eating behaviors are issues that can't be avoided. Even if genetics are the major culprit, the solution is inevitably diet and eating behaviour. Diet itself is one of the most significant environmental causes of morbid obesity. Fast food outlets have gradually increased the portion sizes so that over time people have come to believe that these large portions are in fact normal. This is so untrue but the impact on diet has been profound. In addition, the public has come to rely on fast food and junk food for their convenience and this high caloric intake has done a lot of damage.
Now What Do You Do?
If environmental causes of morbid obesity is of concern to you either for yourself or for your family, then finding a way to change to a healthier lifestyle is paramount. Find a weight loss program you can stick to and incorporate physical activities to your daily routine. There are literally thousands of weight loss programs available. There is no "one size fits all" program but with a bit of searching you can find one that appeals. Do your homework, commit to changing your life and it will happen. It's always a good idea to consult a physician if you feel their are significant health issues that need to be addressed. And, finally, don't wait until the problem gets worse. Do something about it today.
